At The Melissa Institute for Violence Prevention and Treatment, we mourn with the families and friends of the 11 worshipers massacred during Shabbat at the Tree of Life synagogue in Pittsburgh. The congregants shared the belief that every human being is made in the image of God and that through prayer and communion with others we can help make our world a better and safer place for all.
We also are mindful and supportive of the many public service officials and private citizens who in recent days were the target of domestic terrorism, as well as the many more who, because of these events, now feel increasingly fearful and vulnerable. These senseless acts remind us of the reprehensibly high levels of violence in this country, the disturbingly easy access to guns in our communities, the alarming surge in hateful and dehumanizing attitudes and behaviors in our public life, and the urgent need to disseminate and adopt practices and policies proven to prevent violence, significantly reduce rates of homicide by firearms and promote harmonious and safer communities.
The Melissa Institute is steadfast in its commitment to prevent violence and promote safer communities through education and the application of research-based knowledge. Since our inception in 1996, we have collaborated and provided consultation to public officials, mental health agencies, nonprofit organizations, places of worship, and schools. We are now reaching out to our partners to support each other and better assist those in need. We also asked that you consider doing the same within your circle of family and friends.
