About:

As a result of the COVID19 pandemic, there has been an escalation in the incidence of violence toward others, whether in the form of domestic or street violence, and violence toward oneself (suicides). In fact, the number of calls to suicide prevention hotlines have increased by 800%. In this three-hour presentation, Dr. Meichenbaum, the Research Director of the Melissa Institute, will discuss ways to understand the nature of anger and aggression and ways to implement evidenced-based cognitive behavioral interventions with diverse populations. Additionally, attendees will learn best practices to assess for suicide risk. Dr. Meichenbaum will outline various evidenced-based suicide assessment strategies from Brown et. al. (2014) and how to implement these most effectively via telehealth (Jobes et. al. 2020). Each attendee will learn an innovative self-administered anger control and bystander intervention program to be used with their clients. Participants will also receive a detailed set of Handouts.

Learning Objectives:

Participant will be able to:

  1. Implement evidence-based cognitive-behavioral interventions designed to reduce aggression with diverse populations.
  2. Assess for suicidal risk and protective factors in both adults and adolescents, including ways to use telehealth procedures.
  3. Implement psychotherapeutic interventions with suicidal patients, addressing issues of co-occurring disorders of Complex PTSD and substance abuse.
