As a result of the COVID19 pandemic, there has been an escalation in the incidence of violence toward others, whether in the form of domestic or street violence, and violence toward oneself (suicides). In fact, the number of calls to suicide prevention hotlines have increased by 800%. In this three-hour presentation, Dr. Meichenbaum, the Research Director of the Melissa Institute, will discuss ways to understand the nature of anger and aggression and ways to implement evidenced-based cognitive behavioral interventions with diverse populations. Additionally, attendees will learn best practices to assess for suicide risk. Dr. Meichenbaum will outline various evidenced-based suicide assessment strategies from Brown et. al. (2014) and how to implement these most effectively via telehealth (Jobes et. al. 2020). Each attendee will learn an innovative self-administered anger control and bystander intervention program to be used with their clients. Participants will also receive a detailed set of Handouts.

Donald Meichenbaum, Ph.D., is Research Director of The Melissa Institute and Distinguished Professor Emeritus at the University of Waterloo in Ontario. He has served as Distinguished Visiting Professor at the School of Education at the University of Miami. He is one of the founders of cognitive behavior therapy. North American clinicians voted Dr. Meichenbaum “one of the 10 most influential psychotherapists of the 20th century.” He has presented in all 50 states and internationally. Dr. Meichenbaum has published extensively, and his latest books are Treating Individuals with Addictive Disorders: A Strengths-based Workbook for Patients and Clinicians and The Evolution of Cognitive Behavior Therapy: A Personal and Professional Journey with Don Meichenbaum.
