About:

The ability to experience and nurture empathy is a critical aspect to the promotion of pro-social behaviors and the prevention of violence. Mary Gordon, an internationally award-winning social entrepreneur in the field of education, educator, author, parenting expert and child advocate, will guide us through an informative and inspiring discussion of lesson learned in over 25 years of empathy education and training around the world.

The presentation focuses on the role of empathy in the prevention of violence and aggression, executive functioning capacities, using the lens of Temperament to understand periods of child development, and ways to nurture empathy. As children communicate through actions, attendees will learn how to identify children’s Temperament traits as a way for families and teachers to be able to interpret a child’s behavior. Additionally, Mary Gordon will outline the differences between cognitive empathy and affective empathy and how these distinctions are important in the function of empathy development. Participants will be able to utilize this knowledge to assist children and families they work with to encourage empathy and prevent later incidences of violence.

Learning Objectives:

Participant will be able to:

  1. Learn about the nature of empathy and its role in the prevention of violence and aggression.
  2. Apply knowledge on executive functioning and knowledge of child development to increase social and emotional competencies and pro-social behaviors amongst children.
  3. Implement strategies to nurture empathy and help families develop skills to interpret a child’s behavior and intervene.
